'19th Hole Party' raises funds for historic Austin MUNY
AUSTIN (KXAN) — If you like golf, good music and fun, you won’t want to miss the 19th Hole Party.
The gathering will celebrate Lions Municipal Golf Course as an integral part of Austin.
Lions Municipal Golf Course, also known as MUNY, was the first public golf course in the city of Austin and the first course to desegregate in the South.
The course has been serving Austinites and visitors to Austin for more than 100 years, but the future of the course is unknown, with talks of possible development coming up over the years.
The golf course is operated by the city of Austin, but it’s owned by the University of Texas, which has leased the land to the city since the 1930s.
The MUNY Conservancy, which took on the roll of raising awareness and making sure the course continues on, said events like the 19th Hole Party educate people on the significance of the course.
“One thing that MUNY is all about is spreading word in the community,” said MUNY Conservancy member Scotty Sayers. “This is an affordable and accessible place. So an event where we have 800 to 900 people, they go tell their friends and over the last 50 years as we have tried to make a deal with the University of Texas and especially over the last 5 years, spreading the word is really, really important.”
The “19th Hole Party” will be held Friday Sept. 12, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the The American Legion-Charles Johnson House.
