St. John’s finally on even footing with UConn in this huge Big East battle

The score is Dan Hurley 4, Rick Pitino 0.

The two men have met four times inside of two years, and Hurley has yet to lose to the Hall of Famer. One matchup came in the NCAA Tournament when Pitino was still at Iona University, and there were three other encounters a season ago in Pitino’s first year at St. John’s.

Friday night feels different. Pitino isn’t bringing a knife to a gun fight this time.

When No. 12 St. John’s puts its nine-game winning streak on the line at Gampel Pavilion against No. 19 and two-time defending national champion Connecticut, it is an even playing field.
