Liberty Hill falls to Aaliyah Chavez, Lubbock Monterey in UIL 5A-D2 girls hoops title game



AUSTIN (KXAN) — Lubbock Monterey held Liberty Hill to two points in the second quarter and sailed to a Class 5A-Division II girls basketball title 64-35 Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Led by the consensus national No. 1 recruit Aaliyah Chavez, Monterey held the Panthers to eight points in the final frame, missing 11 of their last 12 shots. Chavez scored a game-high 19 points but took 26 shots to do it. She was named the game’s MVP.

Liberty Hill shot 20%, making 12 of 61 field goal attempts, and turned the ball over 13 times, leading to 20 Monterey points. Reagan Robbins led the Panthers with nine points. Gabby Mundy, a Wofford signee, shot 2 for 14 with five points. Evie Bruce shot 2 for 13 with seven points and 11 rebounds. She’ll play collegiately for Tennessee-Chattanooga next year.

Ambrosie Cole had 16 points and Johnson Ari had 12 for Monterey.

Both the Panthers and Lady Plainsmen ended the season with 36-5 records.
