Annual Elgin Arts & Culture kicks off Thursday



AUSTIN (KXAN) — The city of Elgin is gearing up to host its annual Explore Elgin Arts & Culture event. The event slated from May 8-11 will include a weekend full of art, music and history.

Elgin Mayor Theresa McShan said in a press release the weekend has been a highly anticipated event for residents and visitors.

McShan said, “We all look forward to Explore Elgin Arts & Culture every year because we have the opportunity to experience the work of all so many of Elgin’s most talented artists and musicians…I look forward to seeing everyone there!”

The Sip, Shop & Stroll and the Elgin Texas Farmers’ Market will kick off the weekend on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Veterans’ Memorial Park. The release stated, attendees can enjoy live entertainment and shop for one-of-a-kind gifts such as jewelry, locally produced foods, home goods and more in Historic Downtown Elgin from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. 

According to the release, many local merchants will feature in-store specials and extended hours at shops and restaurants. 

Carlos Grandia at The Clever Tiger will facilitate a free spray-painting activity sponsored by Elgin Arts Association (EAA). EAA will also collaborate with local venues to exhibit at locations around downtown, the release added. 

Residents and visitors were also invited to continue the festivities with Music in the Park on Friday. According to the release, the show will be on the Main State at Veterans Memorial Park from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Depot Street and Avenue C. Those attending can bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets.

This year’s Explore Arts & Culture weekend will also feature a Farm Tour, a new addition that includes the facilities at Austin Community College and five farms in the area. According to the release, these farms provide a variety of items including produce, meats, poultry, breads and more. A variety of activities will also be available at each location. 

On Saturday at La Cultura Market, guests can expect a variety of vendors selling artisan clothing, jewelry, gifts, Hispanic street food, favorite Latino snacks and more. The market will be held at Veterans Memorial Park and the stage will feature music throughout the event. 

The weekend events will include tours of local artist’s studios, a variety of workshops and demonstrations, a Typewriter Rodeo, wine tastings, blacksmithing, vendors, art exhibits and architectural walking tours, the release stated. Local venues will host artists, live music, food , drinks and special events.

The Elgin Public Library will host arts and crafts activities and Elgin Parks & Recreation will host games and activities throughout the weekend as well as “Yarn Bombing” at Elgin Memorial Park.
