Tommy's Travel Forecast: Huge temperature swings

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Weather during May is full of surprises. In this week’s travel forecast, we break down a big weather pattern change, discussing excessive heat, heavy rain, severe weather, and springtime snow.

This forecast covers the period from May 11 to May 18.

In the Southern Plains, a strong ridge of high pressure will deliver warmer-than-normal temperatures for millions across the country, with record-high temperatures expected.

Widespread 90s and 100s will likely lead to heat alerts, with low-end rain chances returning next weekend.

In the Deep South, a slow-moving low-pressure system continues to produce localized flooding and severe weather, with several days of rain expected along the east coast.

Additional low-pressure systems will steer around the ridge of high pressure, keeping all of the unsettled weather in the Pacific Northwest, Great Plains, Midwest, and the Northeast. In the Rockies, several inches of mountain snow will keep skiers happy.
