Waymo recalls 1,200 autonomous vehicles, Reuters says

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company, has recalled 1,200 vehicles after reports of the vehicles crashing into barriers, according to a report from Reuters.

According to the report, the recall affected 1,212 vehicle “operating on the company’s fifth-generation automated driving system software.”

The company is aware of 16 collisions with chains, gates and other barriers between 2022 and 2024, according to the report.

The government recall notice said each vehicle used a specific generation of software that is being updated free of charge.

Austinites are fairly familiar with seeing the autonomous vehicles driving around city streets in Austin. Waymo has about 1,500 vehicles on the road in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin.

In early March, Waymo and Uber launched their partnership in Austin, which allows Uber rideshare users to book a driverless ride around Austin. The company also plans to expand its service to Atlanta, Miami and Washington, D.C., according to Reuters.
