Elon Musk confirms robotaxis to be in Austin soon, CNBC reports

AUSTIN (KXAN) — There are about to be even more autonomous vehicles on the road in Austin soon, after Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed his company will have robotaxis in Austin by the end of June, according to a report from CNBC.
Austinites are fairly familiar with seeing Waymo autonomous vehicles driving around city streets in Austin. Waymo has about 1,500 vehicles on the road in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin.
The announcement from Musk comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had questions for Tesla last week about its plan to launch the autonomous vehicles in Austin.
Tesla unveiled its robotaxi at the Warner Bros. studio in Hollywood back in October 2024, with Musk pulling up to the stage in the company’s “Cybercab,” The Associated Press reported.
KXAN reported in December 2024 that Tesla began discussing the autonomous vehicle technology with the city of Austin’s Transportation and Public Works Department.
“The City treats each AV company that expresses interest in Austin the same, offering training opportunities and providing uniform information,” the transportation spokesperson said in an email to KXAN at the time.
Musk said those Cybercabs will cost under $30,000, according to the AP.
