Camel brought to Austin High School as part of 'most memorable' senior prank

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Mr. Maroo has been the official mascot of Austin High School since the 1960s, but he’s got some strong competition.

A camel was brought to campus Thursday as part of a prank by graduating seniors. The Austin ISD Police Department posted a photo of the camel to its Facebook page.

“I just want to say this was an amazing group of seniors, and our staff will miss them,” Principal Dr. Melvin Bedford said. “They are creative, confident and extremely smart.”

The prank was sponsored by Austin High School parents, Bedford said, and the camel was well taken care of, with a professional trainer with it “every step of the way.”

The two campus police officers, Richard Bond and Gilbert Harros, were on standby to ensure safety, along with campus administrators.

“This is by far the most memorable senior prank I have seen in my 20 years,” Bedford said.
