APD SWAT standoff after after reported robbery

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police said an urgent 911 call Sunday night that reported a robbery led to a standoff lasting into the early morning hours of Memorial Day.

Austin Police Department Public Information Officer Austin Zarling said the first call came around 10:45 p.m. Sunday from East Rundberg Lane near Interstate 35. That’s in the area near Dobie Middle School and Gustavo “Gus” L. Garcia District Park.

When officers got to the scene, they found a victim who told officers they experienced an aggravated robbery, according to APD.

Zarling said officers found a possible suspect in the area. That person retreated into a residence and barricaded themselves, APD said.

Officers said the suspect was armed. Additional officers and SWAT then responded to the scene and nearby homes were evacuated.

Officers provided an update to the media before 5 a.m. Monday. Moments after the press conference concluded, KXAN crews reported hearing a loud blast on the scene.

APD’s public information office confirmed to KXAN that a search warrant had been obtained for the residence where the suspect was barricaded.

APD said the suspect was no longer on the scene, but did not provide additional information.
