Jets’ bold statement on Garrett Wilson’s help doesn’t eliminate the big questions
Combining two receivers doesn’t necessarily make one No. 2 receiver.
The Jets’ advertised offensive philosophy to feed the ball often to Garrett Wilson sounds smart, but every NFL defensive coordinator is going to throw extra defenders at the three-time 1,000-yard weapon unless someone steps up to offer balance on the other side of the formation.
Enter Allen Lazard and Josh Reynolds, who are the leading candidates to emerge as Wilson’s top complement, but certainly won’t be confused for Wilson’s last running mate, Davante Adams, nor Tee Higgins, DeVonta Smith or any other No. 2 option in one of the NFL’s best receiving duos.
“I’m here for whatever they need me for — if it’s No. 2, if it’s No. 3,” said Reynolds, who signed a one-year, $2.75 free agent contract. “Time will tell. Guys will emerge and guys will fall. That’s just the nature of the business. I’m here to help the team win.”
