TCSO: Travis County inmate dies after being found 'unresponsive' Tuesday

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Travis County Sheriff’s Office and local agencies are investigating after an inmate at the Travis County Correctional Complex was found “unresponsive in his cell” and died Tuesday evening.

A news release from TCSO said Benjamin Emery McGuire, 54, of Austin, was found unresponsive shortly after he was served dinner. Officials said this happened around 4:17 p.m.

Responding corrections staff conducted CPR immediately, and EMS was called to the scene.

McGuire was pronounced dead at 5:17 p.m., TCSO said.

According to the sheriff’s office, McGuire was booked into custody on April 24 and was charged with Injury to a Child/Elderly and Criminal Trespass.

The investigation will be conducted by TCSO’s Internal Affairs Unit, Criminal Investigations Division, the Round Rock Police Department and the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. According to the release, this is customary with any death in custody.

An autopsy was conducted Wednesday and the final report is still pending.
