Austin sports complex damaged after severe weather
AUSTIN (KXAN) — For almost 70 years, the baseball fields at Delwood Sports Complex have been a place where the community has gathered to enjoy games.
“We are a city of Austin park, and the city provides the facilities for us, then we put in a lot of the work,” Ross Pry, co-president of Delwood Sports Complex, said.
After recent severe weather, the fields and facilities near Mueller were damaged, and now some of the fields are off-limits.
“Unfortunately, we are out of commission for a while until we can get clearance from the city and get them to help us really do a lot of this work,” Pry said.
Pry said following the recent storm, they had a large group of volunteers show up to clean up the debris, but some of the damage will have to be repaired.
“Our roof was ripped off and was actually two fields over, so we had to come over. We had a group of about 100 volunteers throughout the day that were putting in a lot of hard work,” Pry said.
There is still a field that can be used, but with so many teams, Pry said they have had to make some scheduling changes to fit everyone in, and a lot of the older kids are playing on much smaller fields.
Cynthia Mercado has two sons who play at Delwood. She said her kids have noticed the impacts.
“I know a lot of the kids are sad that they can’t practice on their own field,” Mercado said.
Multiple teams use the fields at Delwood. Andrew Arce said it was tough news to hear about his field being closed.
“I feel sad because I have played on that field for about three years now, and I have had a lot of memories on that field,” Arce said.
It’s unclear how long it will take to get the damage repaired.
KXAN reached out to the city to find out if it plans to do any work soon. We will let you know when we hear more.
