Dakota Johnson Practices the Wrong Purse Theory With an Ultra-Sheer Dress
You’ve heard of the wrong shoe theory, but Dakota Johnson just made the case for another stylish break from the norm.
On January 5, the Materialists star wore a very sheer dress for a taping of Late Night with Seth Meyers, breaking the age-old (read: boring) myth that brown and black don’t pair well together. Johnson’s look—pulled straight off Nensi Dojaka’s spring 2025 runway—featured a strapless brown bodysuit layered under a sheer black overlay with a high neckline and long sleeves, adding a demure touch to the so-called naked dress. She finished off the ensemble with a pair of sheer black tights and black peep-toe sling-backs.
In fact, all of her accessories were black and gold, barring her mid-size brown shoulder bag, which appears to be Gucci’s medium Jackie—an unexpected addition to a look that feels primed for every woman’s go-to LBP (little black purse). Personally, I love the way the structured brown leather contrasts with the flouncy black mermaid skirt, giving the evening look a more casual daytime makeover in one easy step. Plus, the bag’s gold hardware goes perfectly with her elegant gold hoops and ear cuff.
The best thing about Gucci’s signature Jackie bag, in my opinion, is its size and structure, which fits the everyday essentials without adding too much bulk, unlike some of the boho styles currently trending. Of course, you don’t have to spend upwards of $4,000 to create the same effect. Many mid-range luxury brands offer more affordable options, particularly Coach, whose Brooklyn Shoulder 28 and Empire Carryall 34 both fit the bill.
Any of these bags would go well with Johnson’s sheer look, which some might be tempted to call a “revenge dress” given the reports surrounding her alleged breakup from Chris Martin. However, Johnson rocked a very similar sheer look during her last appearance on LNWSM in February 2024.
