Bastrop ISD superintendent announces retirement

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Bastrop Independent School District Superintendent Barry Edwards announced his retirement after dedicating 17 years to the district, according to a news release.

The Bastrop ISD Board of Trustees accepted Edwards’ retirement during the district’s school board meeting on Monday. Edwards has 37 years of service in public education, the release said.

“Bastrop ISD will always hold a special place in my heart,” Edwards said in the release. “I leave this role confident in the strength of this district and in its current leadership, and filled with hope for a bright future ahead.”

During Edwards’ time as superintendent, the district “experienced significant growth, including a 19% increase in student enrollment.”

“Mr. Edwards has led Bastrop ISD with integrity, heart, and a deep commitment to our students and staff,” said Ashley Mutschink, President of the BISD Board of Trustees, in the release. “On behalf of the Board, I want to thank him for his service and wish him and his family the very best in this next chapter.”

Before working for Bastrop ISD, Edwards started as a teacher in El Paso. He also served as principal in Socorro and Ysleta Independent School Districts, the release said. The district said Edwards “built a reputation as an advocate for children, and his bilingual fluency in Spanish and English allowed him to connect with the diverse families he served.”

The district said it will “work closely with the community” in its search for the next superintendent in “the coming months.”
