AUSTIN (KXAN) — Looking to raise a family in Texas? This is how much it could cost.

SmartAsset, a financial technology company, said it ranked 48 major U.S. metro areas based on the cost of raising a small child. The study also evaluated the annual change in these costs.

According to SmartAsset, the costs include additions for food, housing, childcare, healthcare, transportation and other necessities.

While most Texas metros were on the cheaper end nationally, the Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metro was the most expensive in the state.

Ranking at No. 29 nationally, the study found that in a household with two working adults, the annual cost of raising a child in 2025 would be $24,188.

The metro also saw the largest increase in the state, with a one-year change of 7.95% from 2024’s $22,406.

  • Annual cost of raising a child, 2024: $21,014
  • One-year change: −0.33%

SmartAsset said it used data from MIT’s Living Wage Calculator. The data was as of February 2025 and was compared to data from February 2024.
