LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) — “Why did the ducklings fall on the sidewalk? They tripped on a quack!”

A Leander Police probationary officer and his field training officer helped save the day over the weekend, when they rescued six black-bellied whistling ducklings that had fallen into a storm drain.

PPO Weatherly and FTO Real responded to Lakeline Boulevard near Sonny Drive. When they arrived, “momma duck was not playing nice,” Leander PD said in a social media post.

After removing the cover, Weatherly “has to remove some of his uniform to help him freely move to capture the ducklings.”

Six ducklings were recovered and “secured into a bucket.” They were then taken across the street to a pond, where they could reunite with the mother duck.

Last week, a young screech owl, “Hootie Hoot,” was rescued from a front porch on Friday after a resident contacted Leander Animal Services. An animal services officer then contacted MoonShine Wildlife Rehabilitation to help the little owl out.
