How We Were Liars Author E. Lockhart Helped Bring That Shocking Twist to Life

But Lockhart did change some aspects of the novel. “The twist is the same,” she shared. “There’s a reveal close to the end, that is a small addition to just bring it forward and give more energy to that 10 minutes of the show. And I think that works really well. I can’t wait for fans to see this.”

Lockhart is referring to last moments of the eight-episode season, which reveals Carrie interacting with her son Johnny’s ghost. During that moment, Carrie [Mamie Gummer] tells Johnny [Joseph Zada] that she assumed he had left to which he replies, “I don’t think I can.”

While this detail isn’t in the novel, We Were Liars, it sets up a potential second season based on the prequel, Family of Liars, which centers on Carrie Sinclair.

In fact, Lockhart included multiple Easter eggs that connect to the prequel. “The adult sisters, Carrie, Penny, and Bess are fairly small characters in the We Were Liars novel, and they’re hugely fleshed out in the show. Each of them has their own storyline,” she explained. “Some of that reflects my prequel novel, Family of Liars, and the sister dynamic that’s established in that book.”

We will just have to wait to unravel more mysteries within the Sinclair family. In the meantime, keep reading for more books being adapted into movies and TV shows.
