Spanish ambassador, Abbott talk economics and cultural connections
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Governor Greg Abbott met with Spanish Ambassador Ángeles Moreno Bau on Monday in an effort to strengthen the economic relationship between Texas and Spain.
The meeting, which took place on the same day that the Texas legislature began its special session, emphasized Spain’s strong economic connection to the state. The country currently has over 100 active investments across Texas.
Spain and Texas have collaborated across sectors, specifically cultivating a strong relationship in the energy sector. Spanish companies have opened wind and solar farms across the state, with Spanish energy company Iberdrola generating clean energy for Austin since 2017.
According to the governor’s office, Spain is the eight-largest source of foreign investments for projects in the state, with companies investing nearly $6 billion into Texas. The office estimates that this has generated nearly 8,000 jobs for Texans. Trade activity between the nation and the state is also high, with the 2024 total clocking in at just above $10 billion.
Beyond economic ties, Abbot and Moreno Bau discussed the historical and cultural connections between Texas and Spain. The two leaders specifically highlighted the San Antonio Missions, established by Spanish priests in the 16th century. The missions are National Park service site, and the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in the state.
