Gigi Hadid’s Patchwork Gown Takes Fall’s Western Trend in an Unexpected Direction

To celebrate her Vogue cover with best friend Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid wore a sparkling quilt-inspired, patchwork gown that’s fun, young, a bit Americana, and so Gigi Hadid–ish. Allow me to explain.

Here’s the dress she wore to a party celebrating the launch of Vogue’s October issue at Monsieur in the East Village. Pretty, right? Beads and sequins add sparkle, there are lots of textures and patterns, it’s got sort of a quilt pattern going on that calls to mind Hadid’s all-American pedigree. She’s worked with brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren, and this fits right in with that sporty aesthetic. Her earrings look a little like soda can tabs, how fun! And she arrived with boyfriend Bradley Cooper, cute cute cute.

Then you might realize that her dress is of a piece with the shorter one she’s wearing on the cover of the very magazine the party is for. A-ha! A theme emerges! Westernwear for fall carries over from magazine page to sidewalk.

But here’s where I’m going to take you back, dear reader, to a piece of Gigi Hadid lore that, as the kids say, lives in my mind rent-free. Do you remember how she decorated her old apartment? With the colored pasta in the cabinets? This is a woman who is not just fond of patterns; she is enamored of them. The couch where every cushion is a different style!

Granted, this was five years ago, and maybe her taste has changed, but dear goodness I hope it hasn’t changed too much, because I have only grown fonder of this apartment in the time since. Gigi loves maximalism and I love that for Gigi. She should surround herself with all things colorful and bright and fun, and she should wear lots of patterns, and she looks beautiful in that dress! More Gigi Hadid–core! More!
