19 Cool Winter Haircuts to Try This Season

Winter is coming—which means trendy winter haircuts are already in season. Ready for a seasonal rebrand? Stylists say that right now is the ideal time to try something new.

While there’s a trend circulating for just about every length and texture right now, one style is having a major revival: bangs. “Everyone came back from the summer asking for bangs,” says Eddie Parra, celebrity hairstylist and senior stylist at Benjamin Salon New York. “From cozy curtain bangs to heavy straight across bangs, the cooler weather allows you to have a more distinctive style.”

While a fringe resurgence during a brand new Taylor Swift era makes perfect sense to us, Olya Iudina, a hairstylist at IGK NYC, also points to Sabrina Carpenter’s retro-influenced hair as a major source of inspiration: “It’s voluminous and still very ’90s, an aesthetic that we have all been enjoying lately.” Plus, bangs are pretty practical once the temperature cools down. “Now that hot and sweaty season is over, bangs become easier to manage,” Iudina adds.

If you’re not ready to jump on the bangs bandwagon, there are plenty of other ways to shake up your look. Right now, stylists are seeing extremes. “I think people are either doing short little bobs or long mermaid hair,” Parra says. But you can always opt for a subtler look. Right now, Parra’s favorite cuts involve “longer fuller hair, with soft framing around the face and seamless layers blending everything together.”

As for the other looks we’ll be seeing tons of this winter? Lots of layers and super-short crops like pixies and bobs. “Recently, I’m noticing my clients are coming in to chop off a good amount of hair,” says celebrity hairstylist Erik Jon. “Anything from right at the collarbone to shorter, just below or at jaw length, will give you the desired look.”

And while it may be the unofficial beginning of cuffing season, breakup haircuts are getting some pop culture spotlight this year—from The Summer I Turned Pretty to celebs IRL. “Cutting off a good amount of hair symbolizes a fresh start or a new chapter in life as you are getting rid of all the stagnant energy in your hair,” Jon says.
