‘September 5’s Tim Fehlbaum To Direct Remake Of French Thriller ‘Black Box’ For Netflix
EXCLUSIVE: French thriller feature Boîte Noire (Black Box) is getting an English-language remake.
Netflix has acquired the remake rights to the film with Oscar-nominated September 5 director Tim Fehlbaum attached to helm the adaptation.
The original film was directed by Yann Gozlan and was released in 2021 by Studiocanal with Distrib Films handling a limited release in the U.S. It starred Pierre Niney and Étoile star Lou de Laâge.
The paranoid thriller, which is in the tradition of The Conversation and The Parallax View, follows an NTSB black box analyst, who after being assigned to investigate the aftermath of a catastrophic plane crash, uncovers chilling audio anomalies that no one else seems willing to acknowledge. As he digs deeper for the truth, he provokes powerful forces determined to silence him before he exposes a shocking conspiracy.
The remake is being produced by 1.21‘s Andrew Mittman, who produced Austin Butler-fronted Elvis, Dave Franco and Alison Brie-led horror movie Together and Netflix’s Wednesday series, as well as Wassim Beji, Thibault Gast and Matthias Weber, who produced the original. 1.21’s Kai Dolbashian is exec producing.
Tim Fehlbaum is coming off the back of September 5, which told the story of the 1972 Munich massacre through the eyes of the ABC Sports team that was covering the Olympics. He co-wrote and directed the movie, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay earlier this year. Repped by CAA and Black Bear, he also wrote and directed sci-fi thriller Tides in 2021.
