AJ Styles retires following WWE Royal Rumble 2026 loss to Gunther

The professional wrestling career of AJ Styles is over. Styles shared the ring with Gunther at WWE “Royal Rumble 2026.” The stipulation going into the match was that Styles would be forced to retire if he lost. Ultimately, the “Phenomenal” one couldn’t defeat “The Ring General.”

Styles had success early on. He was focused on the calf of Gunther and even locked in the Calf Crusher. Gunther avoided tapping out and eventually wore Styles down enough to beat him into retirement. The end of the match occurred when Styles attempted the Phenomenal Forearm, but Gunther caught him in a sleeper hold. Eventually, Styles passed out in the hold.

A Phenomenal Career

Styles is widely regarded as one of the most talented performers of his era. At one point in his career, Styles was known as “Mr. TNA.” He helped the company build their X Division in the early years. Styles proved himself as a main eventer, winning the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship and the TNA World Championship.

Styles eventually made his way to NJPW, which many argue was his in-ring peak. Along the way, Styles captured the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. The “Phenomenal” one made his official WWE debut in the 2016 men’s Royal Rumble match. Styles became a two-time WWE Champion, and he also captured United States gold, as well as tag team gold.
