Box Office: ‘Michael’ Hits Higher Note In Global Opening With $218.8M


Michael came in higher in both its domestic and global take with $97.2M and $218.8M, respectively.

The Lionsgate-produced and -released feature Stateside saw a Sunday of $25.4M ($400K more than expected), which repped a -22% hold off Saturday’s $32.4M.

Foreign was $121.6M from 82 territories versus the $120.3M reported Sunday by Universal.

Again, Michael is the second-biggest MPA global opening weekend of 2026 behind The Super Mario Galaxy move ($372.5M) and in like-for-like markets and today’s exchange ranges, Michael‘s opening frame is the biggest ever for a musical biopic (and that’s with and without previews, and with and without China).

In 64 territories, Michael notched the highest-grossing opening for a musical biopic, apart from China (now at $4.8M), where it opened just below Bohemian Rhapsody.

There’s a lot of excitement about the first weekend of summer with 20th Century Studios/Disney’s The Devil Wears Prada 2, which tracking has as of this minute at $73M, but advance ticket sales indicate higher. Disney decided to forgo the traditional Marvel movie launch to kick off the season.

Industry sources expect Michael to do around $50M in Weekend 2. That’s a 49% ease. Graham King’s Bohemian Rhapsody back in 2018 had a fantastic Weekend 2 hold of -39% with $31.2M Overall, Bohemian Rhapsody, off an A CinemaScore, did a 4.2x multiple off its $51M opening for a final stateside of $216.4M.

Last year, the first weekend of summer did $144.2M, per Box Office Mojo led by Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* ($74.3M) and the third weekend of Sinners in second with $33.1M, followed by the fifth weekend of A Minecraft Movie in third with $13.7M.
