Netflix Turns Attention To ‘Florida’ In Sequel To Norwegian Disaster Series ‘La Palma’

Netflix is returning to hit Norwegian disaster series La Palma.

The streamer has greenlit a mini-series sequel titled Florida for the show that is currently ranking in the top 10 of Netflix’s non-English language charts.

La Palma stars Severance breakout Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Thea Sofie Loch Næss and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal. Partly based on the 2021 Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption, it follows a Norwegian family on holiday in the Canary Islands as they confront chaos when researchers uncover signs of an imminent volcanic eruption that could trigger a catastrophic tsunami.

Revealed at an event today in Norway, Netflix said Florida will pick up just hours after the volcanic eruption, shifting the focus to a Norwegian community in the U.S. who are still unaware that a devastating tsunami is on its way.

The series is written by Lars Gudmestad and directed by Cecilie Mosli. It is produced by Fantefilm , which is known for “Scandisaster” productions such as La Palma and The Burning Sea.

Gudmestad said: “To be able to make Florida is a dream I have had for a long time, and I am very pleased that Netflix also believes in the project. Our ambition is to create a spectacular disaster series with characters audiences can recognize themselves in and truly care about, and that’s why it’s so reassuring to have such a talented and experienced director like Cecilie with us on this journey.”

Mosli added: “People confronted with crises are the most fascinating starting point for drama. With La Palma, Lars Gudmestad, Fantefilm and Netflix demonstrated the power of combining large-scale disasters with intimate human stories, and I am very proud and happy to be part of the new project, Florida.”
