AISD 2022 Bond: A brand new high school is being built in Southeast Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) —  Austin ISD administrators have had a busy week, celebrating the groundbreaking for two high school modernizations.

One of them at Anderson High School and the other at Northeast Early College High School.

“We are going to get a new front office, mental health center and also a family resource center,” said Northeast Principal Nathan Neal.

Northeast High School is just one of many schools which will see modernization projects from the 2022 bond.

“The spaces where students will learn will also be able to provide them new technology and more access,” said AISD Trustee, Candace Hunter.

Hunter says planning for the future is key, even if it takes some time to complete these projects.

“Even though the students that are currently in the space might not be able to use it, they will have cousins brothers, uncles, what have you, they will enjoy the space,” said Hunter.

In 2022, voters approved a $2.4 billion bond package, that will ultimately impact more than 110 campuses.

“We will have 18 projects in construction this Fall,” said Michael Mann, AISD’s executive director of construction management. “We are really proud of that, really excited for those campuses, we had 5 ground breakings in May.”

Mann says with so many projects in this bond, it will take a little longer than normal to complete all of the projects. He expects everything in this bond to be completed in about 6 years.

“We have about $400 million spent of the 2.4 billion,” Mann said.

One of the biggest projects is over at Travis Early College High School, where crews are getting ready to pour the foundation for a new school.

“This will be a completely new campus, from the buildings, to the athletics fields, to the CTE space, to the parking lots,” said Mann.

How much will this project cost?

Man says about 250 million dollars for Travis ECHS, the new high school will be built behind the current school for phase 1, then in phase 2 the old high school will be torn down.

The campus will be modernized and opened in phases with the final phase anticipated to open for the start of the 2028-29 school year.

Austin ISD has many projects being worked on, from safety upgrades and fencing, to new HVAC and plumbing systems.

“Over the next year or so the communities will really start to see stuff come out of the ground. And we will start seeing some more ribbon cuttings,” said Mann.
