Austin-area track stars grab gold on Day 1 of UIL championships



AUSTIN (KXAN) — Lago Vista’s Swayde Griffin and Burnet’s Victor Aviles won double golds on the first day of the UIL track championships Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Griffin won the Class 4A boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.62 seconds, edging out Stafford’s Bradley Lowman by two-hundredths of a second. Griffin picked up his second win in the 200 by a slightly larger cushion, finishing in 21.15 and five-hundredths of a second ahead of Dallas Kimball’s Camrin Jackson.

Griffin, also a standout defensive back on the football field, is committed to play for the Arizona Wildcats.

Aviles ran all day for the Burnet Bulldogs. He won the 4A 800 in 1:54.25, beating Charles Anderson from Dallas Carter by about half of a second, and then he claimed the 1600 in 4:17.88, over a second faster than runner-up Ryan Fernandez of Canyon. Aviles also finished second in the 3200.

Austin LBJ grabbed two relay victories in the 4A boys 4×100 and 4×200 races. Ali Scott, Treawn Young-Henderson, KJ Houston and Ladainian Green teamed to win the 4×100 in 41.04, half of a second faster than Lindale. Antione Baker joined Scott, Young-Henderson and Green to win the 4×200 in 1:25.55, beating Celina by almost a second. Wimberley finished third in the 4×200.

Frederickburg’s George Stenberg sped to the 4A boys 100 title in 10.52 and Cameron Yoe’s Tim Grice won the 3A boys 200 title in 20.76. Lexington’s Mason Biehle sailed 24 feet, 1.25 inches for a win in the 3A boys long jump and Kamree Woldrige won the girls 400 in 53.94.

Class 2A and 5A athletes compete Friday while 1A and 6A are scheduled for Saturday.
