East Austin bar, music venue closing after 12 years

AUSTIN (KXAN) — After more than a decade of offering drinks and live music, the Skylark Lounge is closing its doors.

Austinites Johny LaTouf and Mary LaTouf first opened the bar and music venue in East Austin back in 2013.

Now that they are in their 60s, Johnny and Mary are ready to close this chapter of their lives, according to a release from the venue.

The Skylark Lounge spotlighted older blues and soul musicians, who mentored the next generation of artists over the years.

It hosted artists like Blues Boy Hubbard, a member of the Texas Music Hall of Fame, and the late Margaret White, honored in the Austin Music Hall of Fame. In 2022, Yelp named the Skylark Lounge the best dive bar in Texas.

To mark the end of 12 years in business, the Skylark Lounge is hosting five evenings of performances, starting Wednesday. Shows start at 6 p.m. each evening at 2039 Airport Blvd. The final performance is set for 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, featuring local blues artist Soul Man Sam, a regular at the venue.

There is a $10 cover charge to get into the Skylark Lounge. All ages are welcome for the farewell celebrations. The full line-up is available on the bar’s website.
