East Coast getting a taste of Texas' summer heat
AUSTIN (KXAN) – Temperatures will be hot across Central Texas today with afternoon highs in the low to mid-90s. The silver lining? It could be worse as that summer heat dome that typically sits on top of our area this time of year… isn’t. Instead, it’s baking parts of the eastern U.S.
Afternoon highs are expected to climb anywhere from 10°-20° above average in many areas with temperatures reaching the 90s and low 100s. For coastal areas, the addition of humidity will bring heat index values up another +10°.
Tuesday’s forecast highs:
- Boston: 102°
- New York City: 95°
- Philadelphia: 101°
- Washington D.C.: 102°
Cooling stations have been set up in many states. On Sunday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for more than half of the state’s 62 counties, including all five boroughs of New York City.

Millions of Americans are under some kind of heat advisory or extreme heat warning. Heat alerts stretch through parts of the Deep South, Tennessee Valley, upper Midwest, Northeast and Eastern Seaboard.

This large high pressure system will weaken in the coming days, bringing temperatures back down closer to normal by the end of the week.
