Harris County deputy fires at murder suspect from San Marcos in chase, HCSO says

HOUSTON (KIAH) — A man wanted for murder in San Marcos was fired upon by Harris County deputies and taken into custody in Channelview on Friday night.

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office came to a home on Deerpass Drive on Friday evening after a call from San Marcos police, who were searching for a suspect involved in a murder investigation earlier that day and wanted a welfare check on the Channelview home.

Deputies did not contact anyone initially but came to the home 30 minutes later around 7 p.m., and deputies spotted the suspect in the backyard of a neighbor’s home. As the suspect ran, deputies chased after him.

One of the deputies then fired his weapon after seeing what he thought was a gun. Deputies said that the search for the suspect’s weapon continues.

The suspect then hid in another home’s backyard until a K-9 officer was able to find him and deputies took him into custody. Medical personnel checked the suspect and found no gunshot injuries, deputies said.

San Marcos police identified the suspect as Juan Manuel Yanez. The 47-year-old man was wanted for a homicide investigation that may be a domestic violence situation.

The HCSO Homicide Unit will also investigate the scene. The case will also be taken by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to review, deputies said.
