How KXAN is spending the day giving back

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Every year, KXAN dedicates an entire day to giving back to its community as part of Nexstar’s Founder’s Day of Caring. This year, KXAN’s Founder’s Day committee selected two organizations whose mission is to support children during their most vulnerable times.

The Center for Child Protection, founded in 1989, was first known as the Travis County Children’s Advocacy Center. The center’s mission is to “reduce trauma for children during the investigation and prosecution of crimes against children.”

According to the center’s website, the organization provides multilingual services to children and their families, including forensic interviews, educational prevention training, therapy, and medical care as part of its ongoing effort to protect Austin children.

Carrying Hope is a nonprofit organization founded in Austin in 2016 by foster parents and advocates who conceived the idea for Hope Packs — bags filled with everything a child needs during their first 48 hours in a new home. Officials with the nonprofit said they have impacted nearly 30,000 youth and families in the Texas foster care system.

KXAN employees will spend the day creating hygiene kits for children in need of essential sanitary items — including hair care products, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, loofahs, bonnets, and more — as well as Hope Packs filled with toothbrushes, clothing, and comfort items. Our team will also work on a beautification project for the center and create handwritten notes of encouragement for the children being assisted by these organizations.
