Lockhart ISD calls $93M bond election to build new middle school
LOCKHART, Texas (KXAN) — The Lockhart Independent School District Board of Trustees on Monday called for a bond election that, if passed, would allow the district to build a new middle school.
Lockhart ISD voters on May 3 will weigh in on the $93.5 million bond package — money that would build a second middle school and secure land for future projects. As with many other Central Texas school districts, growth is the driving factor behind calling the election.
“We’ve experienced quite a bit of growth over the last 10 years,” said Adam Miller, Lockhart ISD’s director of school safety and communications. “[Since 2017], the district has grown each and every year.”
Miller said Lockhart’s only middle school, Lockhart Junior High School, is already at 97% capacity. If a second one is not built, the current middle school will be at 105% capacity by 2027, he said.
“Optimal capacity for any campuses to operate is around 85% capacity. So we’re already well over that,” Miller said. “The need is definitely there to go ahead and build a new middle school.”
In 2022, a bond election freed up funds to build an additional elementary school which will open in August, Miller said.
“If the bond passes in May, then we have the opportunity to potentially open the doors [to the new middle school] in the fall of 2027,” he added. “Hopefully the community will support us and pass the bond. Then we could have a new middle school here in the next couple of years.”
