Longhorns add well-traveled quarterback Matthew Caldwell through transfer portal
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas added depth to its quarterback room Sunday with the commitment of Troy’s Matthew Caldwell.
Caldwell has one year of eligibility after using a redshirt season as a freshman at Jacksonville State. Texas will be his fourth school. Following his redshirt year, he played two seasons at the FCS program Gardner-Webb and then went to Troy for a season.
Caldwell led the Trojans with 1,608 passing yards and 13 touchdowns, completing 141 of 223 pass attempts. He started the last five games of the 2024 season and played in 10, also getting the start against Iowa.
With Arch Manning as the team’s starting quarterback, Caldwell can provide a veteran presence with FBS game experience in the room to help redshirt freshman Trey Owens and true freshman KJ Lacey. Also, if Manning were to go down at some point, Caldwell could jump in and use some of that experience. Caldwell joins senior Joe Tatum on the roster, as well.
