Nigeria & Brazil Ink Landmark Audiovisual Co-Production Agreement

In a landmark move, Nigeria and Brazil have signed a co-production agreement which will allow both countries to jointly develop, fund and distribute film and TV projects, animations and other audiovisual works. Dubbed the Audiovisual Co-Production Agreement, the bilateral accord hopes to mark a new chapter in cultural collaboration, creative exchange global visibility for both nations.

The agreement will give both countries access to incentives in each nation. Brazil and Nigeria, which are the two most populous Black nations in the world, share deep historical ties rooted in transatlantic experience and the new agreement hopes to bring together talents from both countries through storytelling.

“This landmark partnership with Brazil is more than a bilateral accord – it is a bridge between continents, between cultures and between creative economies,” said Hannatu Musa-Musawa, Nigeria’s Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy. “It affirms Nigeria’s commitment to telling stories on a global stage and working with like-minded nations to elevate African and Afro-Brazilian narratives. Together, we will spark innovation, create jobs and strengthen the creative industries that bind our peoples historically and culturally.”

She continued: “As we build the foundation for a thriving creative economy through initiatives like Destination 2030 and the ‘Nigeria Everywhere’ campaign, this co-production treaty aligns perfectly with our vision for international cultural exchanges and diplomacy as well as sustainable creative sector growth through creating access to new markets.”

Further implementation plans and exchange programs will be announced in the coming weeks.

At last month’s Cannes Film Festival, Nigerian filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr.’s debut feature My Father’s Shadow marked the first film from the African nation to be selected in the lineup. Deadline sat down with Musa-Musawa to talk about Nigeria’s ambitious plans to take its creative industries to new heights. You can watch that interview here
