Orlando Bloom & Domhnall Gleeson Join Kate & Rooney Mara In ‘Bucking Fastard’ With HanWay Boarding For Cannes; Werner Herzog Says Film Completes A Trilogy After ‘Fitzcarraldo’ And ‘Grizzly Man’
EXCLUSIVE: Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings) and Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) have joined Kate and Rooney Mara in Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard, which wrapped filming in Europe this past weekend.
Marking the first time the Mara sisters have appeared on screen together, the film charts the story of Jean and Joan Holbrooke, “two sisters who are so close to each other that they speak in unison, love the same man, and have the same dreams. They even make the same slip of tongue in unison. In search of an imaginary land, the Orkneys – where true love is possible – they start digging a tunnel through an entire mountain range.”
Bloom will play their rowdy ex-lover Gareth Mulroney and Gleeson will be Timothy, their government-issued social worker/mender, trying to help them adapt to modern life after the two become tabloid sensations.
HanWay Films has boarded the project to rep worldwide sales and will be sharing first footage from Dublin, Sligo (Ireland) and Slovenia with buyers at Cannes.
The private equity-backed film is produced by Clara Wu Tsai, Ariel Leon Isacovitch and Agnes Chu, with Kieran Corrigan, Emanuele Moretti and Andrea Bucko.
Herzog reteams with key creative collaborators with whom he has worked on previous projects, including Peter Zeitlinger (Bad Lieutenant) as DoP, Marco Capalbo (The Fire Within: A Requiem for Katia and Maurice) as editor, and Ernst Reijseger (Rescue Dawn) as composer.
Legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog spoke for the first time today about the project: ”Bucking Fastard is a film that, for me, completes a circle in an operatic triptych with my previous films, Fitzcarraldo and Grizzly Man. We cannot see the world as Jean and Joan Holbrooke see it, but we do see how the world reacts to them — through the courts and the press, through those that want to help and those who want to use them, through the eyes of beasts both tame and wild, and even through their own echoes in the core of the earth.”
Gabrielle Stewart, CEO HanWay Films, added: “Werner has surpassed himself in crafting something truly original with surprising notes of humour and fantasy. We are excited to be unveiling exclusive footage of Bucking Fastard to buyers in Cannes.”
