Reese Witherspoon’s Coat Is So on-Trend for Fall—and Also Perfect for Petites

Reese Witherspoon is right. A classic peacoat is the perfect outerwear for fall 2025. Particularly if you, like Witherspoon, are on the petite side.

On October 14, the The Morning Show actor braved the brisk New York City weather in a light gray wool coat, which appears to be the Margot jacket from Max Mara. The coat itself features the peacoat’s traditional design elements, including wide lapels, a boxy shape, and double-breasted buttons—which are in this case flat and metallic.

Witherspoon has always been a timeless girlie, and the rest of this ensemble follows suit. She wore gray dress trousers, black pointed-toe pumps, and a black handbag (possibly this medium-sized pinch purse from Givenchy). She finished the look off with wind-swept blonde hair, gold earrings, and black sunglasses. It’s an ensemble that would look just as polished in pretty much any era since the 1960s.

One could reasonably argue that the classic peacoat has never gone out of style. The tailored coat is, after all, a perennial favorite of the Olsen twins. In recent years, this specific style hasn’t been as trendy for winter as the long wool coat, it’s true. But with the return of Y2K fashion in full swing, it feels like the perfect moment to take outerwear cues from Rory Gilmore and Blair Waldorf. The cropped hemline of Witherspoon’s jacket is also a departure from the robe-like coats we’ve been seeing for the past couple of years, making it an ideal alternative for petites who might get swallowed up in oversize styles.

Witherspoon is currently on a press tour to promote her new novel, Gone Before Goodbye, which she co-wrote with Harlan Coben.
