San Marcos Library updates management system after 20 years
SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — The San Marcos Public Library is getting an upgrade to its operating system after 20 years. Operations at the library will be “temporarily impacted” as staff prepares to launch that new system, the city of San Marcos said in a press release.
The new management system will allow readers to browse the library’s available reading materials in print and digital, according to the release. The city said existing catalog information will automatically transfer to the new system, and users will not need to create a new account.
“The San Marcos Public Library has used the same integrated library system for more than twenty years. We are excited to roll out this update and provide our patrons with a flexible, modern, and user-friendly tool that allows them to access the resources they need and make the most of their library experience,” library director Diane Insley said in release.
According to the press release, the system’s new features include customizable tools for library patrons to explore the library’s reading materials and the ability to reserve or renew books online.
The new system allows library staff to automatically notify readers when books are overdue or readily available. According to the press release, the Polaris Automation System will improve efficiency and accessibility for library staff and patrons, providing easier access to the library’s catalog.
The city purchased the system using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds allocated in 2023 to support the community’s recovery.
From Feb. 20 – 26, patrons will not be able to create new accounts, obtain new library cards or place holds and renew books. During this time, patrons can still check out books.
The library will be closed on Feb. 27 as the management system is implemented and will reopen on Feb. 28.
Starting March 3, library patrons can access the new system on the San Marcos Public Library’s website.
