San Marcos warns of ‘phishing scam’ using public meeting documents
AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Friday, the City of San Marcos warned residents of a “phishing scam” that uses contact information from public meeting documents.
The city said the information from its Planning and Zoning Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustments, and Human Services Advisory Board meeting packets was being used to “target specific individuals or businesses and request payments.”
According to the city, people reported receiving an email that appeared to come from a City of San Marcos employee. The fraudulent email would request payment of fees via a wire transfer, according to the city.
To combat the issue, the city said it has begun to redact email and phone information from the meeting packets “to the extent allowable by law.”
Applicants who have received an invoice or request for payment via email were encouraged to contact the Planning and Development Services Department by phone at 512-393-8230 to confirm fees and payment processes.
