Super Bowl LIX: What NFL Records Could Be Broken This Year
Super Bowl LIX is mere hours from kickoff and two teams at the height of their powers, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles are going toe-to-toe.
With generational talents like quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, tight end Travis Kelce, and running back Saquon Barkley on the field, it seems all but certain some Super Bowl records are getting demolished today.
Let’s take a look at some of them:
Rushing Yards Record
Timmy Smith’s Super Bowl record of 204 rushing yards, set in Washington’s 42-10 win over Denver in 1988, still stands.
Marcus Allen’s 191-yard performance in Super Bowl XVIII is the closest challenge. However, Saquon Barkley, who rushed for 205 yards this postseason, could break the record today.
Scoring Record
Hurts scored 20 points in Super Bowl LVII against Kansas City, tallying three rushing touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Saquon Barkley scored 18 points with three touchdown runs in this year’s NFC Championship Game against the Commanders. There’s a non-zero chance that the Eagles walk away with a new record one way or another.

Pass Touchdown Record
In Super Bowl XXIX, Steve Young set a record with six touchdown passes in a 49-26 win over the Chargers. This topped Joe Montana’s five touchdowns in Super Bowl XXIV, a 55-10 blowout over the Broncos. To break this, Mahomes and Hurts will need literally historic performances.
Passing Yards Record
Tom Brady holds the Super Bowl passing yard record with 505 yards in Super Bowl LII, also ranking second with 466 yards in Super Bowl LI. Kurt Warner is the only other player within 100 yards of Brady, with two performances. Once again Hurts and Mahomes face a tough challenge to break this record.
Consecutive Pass Completion
Eli Manning set a Super Bowl record in Super Bowl XLVI, completing 10 consecutive passes to open the game against the Patriots. Patrick Mahomes has a strong chance of matching this record, as the Eagles’ defense is likely to push the Chiefs into short and intermediate passes.
Mahomes will likely target Kelce and his running backs early, potentially breaking Manning’s record.
Most Combined Points
Super Bowl LVII saw the Eagles and Chiefs combine for 73 points, ranking third all-time, just behind the 74 points in Super Bowl LII (Eagles vs. Patriots) and 75 points in Super Bowl XXIX (49ers vs. Chargers). With both teams bolstering their rosters with dynamic offensive talent and star performances from Hurts and Mahomes, a new record for combined points could very well be within reach.
