Tesla car delivers itself to owner in Austin, NBC says
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin was a testing ground for Tesla’s autonomous delivery after a Tesla car delivered itself to its owner on Friday, according to NBC.
Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, said on X that the Model Y drove from Gigafactory Texas, also known as Giga Texas, to its new owner’s home 30 minutes away.
This comes after Musk discussed plans with CNBC to launch robotaxi operations in Austin, KXAN previously reported. Musk previously mentioned that testing already started in Austin “with no incidents.”
“We want to deliberately take it slow,” Musk said. “I mean, we could start with 1,000 [robotaxis] 10,000 on day one, but I don’t think that would be prudent. So we will start with probably 10 for a week, then increase it to 20, 30, 40.”
There were no people in the car during the trip, according to NBC. Additionally, there were no remote operators in control at any point during the delivery.
Musk said this was the first fully autonomous drive and was completed a day ahead of schedule.
The city of Austin tracks the number of incidents for all autonomous vehicles (AVs) in Austin, according to the city website. For more information on AVs, visit the city website.
