TxDOT advice on how to safely drive in the rain

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Meteorologist Tommy House sat down with Kellen Mohrmann, a TxDOT representative, to discuss safety tips when driving in the rain.
Meteorologist Tommy House: Kellen, what advice does TxDOT have for drivers to help prevent hydroplaning during heavy rain or stormy conditions?
Kellen Mohrmann: Sure! The first thing to know is that whenever roads are wet, hydroplaning can be a risk. During heavy rain, we recommend avoiding travel if possible. However, if you must drive, leave early, slow down, and avoid speeding. Be sure to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Also, don’t forget to turn on your headlights and windshield wipers. Finally, ensure your tires are properly inflated and in good condition.
House: Great advice! Now, how does TxDOT manage road maintenance to reduce the risk of hydroplaning, especially in heavy rain?
Mohrmann: Our roadways are designed with drainage systems that help move water off the road, manage runoff, and prevent flooding and erosion. These systems are routinely inspected and maintained, and our maintenance crews actively monitor roadways during weather events, ready to respond if needed. That said, as I mentioned earlier, hydroplaning is still a risk anytime roads are wet. So, we always advise drivers to take extra care, no matter the amount of rain.
House: Before we wrap up, what additional resources does TxDOT offer for drivers to learn more?
Mornmann: Drivers can visit DriveTexas.org to check current road conditions. And, of course, always remember to buckle up and follow the important safety message: ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown’ if you encounter flooded roads.
