‘X-Men 97”: Season 2 Release Date & Trailer Featuring Apocalypse

Just over two years following the Season 1 finale of X-Men 97, we have a premiere date for Season 2 at Disney+. Marvel Animation has set July 1 for the return of the Emmy-nominated series and has unveiled the first trailer.

The trailer reveals key plot details that were left hanging following the May 2024 Season 1 finale. We see now that the entire X-Men team has been scattered across time, and it’s up to the still-standing mutants to bring them back to their current timeline in the 90s. The X-Men also will be up against their most dangerous threat yet, the immortal megalomaniac mutant Apocalypse.

“The X-Men are scattered through time. In the past, from the start of Apocalypse’s reign, to the future at the height of his rule,” says the narrator in the trailer.

X-Men ’97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

Per the logline, Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.

Season 2 voice cast includes Ross Marquand as Professor X, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and George Buza as Beast.

The Season 2 premiere has been a long time coming. The series received a renewal for a third season in October 2025. The official Season 3 greenlight came more than a year after Matthew Chauncey was tapped to succeed Beau DeMayo as writer following his departure ahead of the Season 1 premiere in March 2020 after completing work on both Season 1 and Season 2.

The revival’s first season launched to critical acclaim and strong ratings, becoming one of the most-watched Disney+ Original animated series (based on hours streamed globally). It is currently “Certified Fresh” with a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes.

X-Men 97 is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, Larry Houston, and Beau DeMayo. Jake Castorena is supervising producer. Episodes written by JB Ballard, Beau DeMayo, Bailey Moore, Antony Sellitti, Brian Ford Sullivan, and Mariah Wilson. The episodic directors are Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley.
